FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
SPARTA, NJ, March 20, 2009 – Following a highly successful inaugural event, the eyes of the tennis world will once again shift to the beautiful lakefront town of Sparta, NJ as picturesque Lake Mohawk Tennis Club hosts the 2nd Annual Newton Motorsports Pro Tennis Classic on Sunday, August 30th. The interactive and exciting format of the event which benefits the Newton Memorial Hospital Foundation begins at 1:00 PM and features professional players pitted against one another in sets of singles and doubles accompanied by music. This year, two professional women players will be added to the exhibition lineup. The balance of players will be announced shortly. Last year’s sold out event provided local area residents with a truly a one of kind opportunity to witness world-class tennis in an intimate setting and this year is poised to build upon that success. Mark Macler, Event Director, commented, “We are thrilled to announce that based upon the results of last year, the Newton Motorsports Pro Tennis Classic will become one of Newton Memorial Hospital Foundation’s signature events. An added benefit for fans is that a portion of their ticket purchase will be tax deductible and goes to benefit a wonderful cause.” Macler further added, “Todd Martin is the ultimate ambassador for the sport of tennis and role model for today’s youth. We couldn’t be more excited to have someone with his credentials and character supporting our fundraising event. I cannot wait for the tennis fans of the area to experience his world-class level of play.” Megan Sandow, Vice President of Development for Newton Memorial Hospital Foundation noted “After the success of the 2008 Pro-Tennis Classic, we were pleased to have the event become one of Newton Memorial Hospital Foundation’s signature events for 2009. We are excited to have a player of Todd Martin’s caliber at the event this year which will help us raise money for the Hospital’s Single Room Maternity Revitalization Project.” Martin was a finalist at the 1999 U.S. Open and 1994 Australian Open and holds career victories over a veritable who’s who of the tennis world including Pete Sampras, Andre Agassi, John McEnroe and Boris Becker. He was a member of the U.S. team which won the 1995 Davis Cup and a winner of eight titles on the ATP Tour. A two-time Wimbledon semi-finalist, he was also twice recognized by his peers with the Tour Sportsmanship Award for his abiding respect for the sport and his competitors. Martin said, “The work of the Newton Memorial Hospital Foundation is critical to maintaining a leading healthcare facility in Sussex County. My wife, Amy, and her family spent many wonderful years in the Sparta area and I look forward to seeing many familiar faces and to a very successful fund raising event.” Sunday’s tennis action will cap off a full weekend of activities along the Sparta boardwalk. It all begins with event sponsor Sparta Athletic Club’s junior tennis clinic on Saturday, August 29th from Noon to 2:00 PM. This free clinic is open to any child between 10-18 years of age interested in learning about the sport of tennis and will feature many of the event’s stars assisting club pros.
